Whether you have a canvas awning or a metal one, a little bit of periodic maintenance will go a long way in keeping it looking its best. Here are a few tips to help you increase your awning’s aesthetic appeal and lengthen its lifespan.

Canvas Awnings

Preventative care is the key to keeping a canvas awning in good condition. A buildup of dirt, grime and other substances will eventually deteriorate the awning’s fabric. On a regular basis, use a broom to knock off dust, dirt and cobwebs. Every few months, use a brush and a mixture of equal parts warm water and dish soap to scrub away bird droppings, mold and mildew. Be sure to clean both the top and the bottom of the awning. Finish by rinsing your canvas awning with a garden hose.

For long-term care, apply a canvas sealant that is formulated for outdoor use. To maximize the sealant’s effectiveness, apply it when the awning has just been cleaned so no dirt or debris gets sealed in.

Metal Awnings

Typically made of aluminum or steel, a metal awning requires very little maintenance. Some regular cleaning is all it takes to keep it looking fresh. Clean your metal awning with soapy water and a soft-bristled brush or cloth rag. If mildew is a problem, try pressure washing the awning with a mild bleach solution.

With proper upkeep, your awnings can last for many years. For more information about awning maintenance, contact Sunstate Awning today.
